Background The project is aligned with the Sudanese principles stressed in the “Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (2011)” and in the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture “Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme – CAADP Compact”. It aims at strengthening the agricultural sector from a self-sufficient to a market-oriented production, and at improving the living conditions of rural populations. Long-lasting sustainable development will be achieved through activities in 3 key determinants of poverty: agriculture practice (livestock strengthening), water service (rainwater harvesting and supply systems) and education (infrastructure development and enhancement of girls’ education).
Objective Improve livelihoods of the rural populations located in the State of Kassala and Red Sea (East Sudan).
Expected outputs and activities
1. Improved horticultural products and livestock.
– Improvement of agronomic practices to increase soil fertility and to preserve soil moisture, control of mesquite;
– Improvement of pastures in order to increase availability of food for livestock as well as construction of water point for animals;
2. Enhanced education and water infrastructures.
– Rehabilitation of school facilities;
– Rehabilitation of small-medium aqueducts, construction of water yards and design of water distribution schemes;
