On 7-11 March 2020, before the spread of coronavirus in Sudan, AICS Khartoum organised a series of events in Khartoum, Port Sudan, and Kassala, to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020.
On 7th March four events were held in Khartoum. The NGO AMNA ran a workshop for young girls and mothers on understanding and preventing gender based violence through a collective game. Moreover, free health check-ups were offered to vulnerable women and men at the Khartoum Omar Khattab Medical Center. This was possible thanks to ad hoc mobile clinics and available specialized health staff. The services provided were family planning; andrology and infertility for males; ante-natal care clinic; cardiology clinic; respiratory clinic (including awareness raising about the importance of quitting smoking); health education in reproductive health and cervical cancer screening.
Mobile clinics offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings and check-ups were set up by the NGO MAZAYA at the Soba Hospital in Khartoum. The initiative was very successful and enjoyed high participation of men and women.
On 8th March multiple parallel celebrations were organised in the presence of Representatives from European Embassies, United Nations Agencies, European Union as well as local Ministries and partners. In Khartoum, the Sudanese National Museum hosted a day-long event featuring a marathon, art and music live performances organised by AICS Khartoum and the Sudanese NGOs AMNA, MAZAYA, SHAMAA together with the Delegation of the European Union to Sudan and UNWomen, and in partnership with the Federal Ministry for Health and Social Development.
On the same day, celebrations were held in Port Sudan and Kassala with the participation of the State Ministers and women associations part of the TADMEEN project. On the occasion, products made by the women beneficiaries of income generating activities were showcased. In Port Sudan, the pediatric hospital and the female prison were provided with medical supplies, toys, clothes and food. In addition, an awareness raising session on legal assistance was held by a local NGO financed by AICS in the female prison of Port Sudan.
All of the above mentioned events shed light on the activities AICS Khartoum carries out with local Authorities and partners to promote gender equality and women empowerment, and guaranteed great visibility to the initiatives of this Agency, confirming once again that gender is a priority area of intervention for the Italian Cooperation in Sudan.
