The list of achievements and initiatives in the health field in Kassala are impressive: the creation of the "Health Kassala Citadel", for a commitment of about 22 Meuro, is a vast area that includes the rehabilitation of a maternal and child hospital with 120 beds , the only blood bank of significant size in the state, a pediatric hospital equipped with 3 operating theaters and intensive care units, a new operating block of modern and functional design, the strengthening of the network of central and peripheral laboratories for control and response purposes to the recurring epidemic crises afflicting this area of the country.
AICS has managed to create a highly productive working environment, based on trust and collaboration with other actors of the Italian system and the UN system, as well as excellent dialogue with Sudanese counterparts. The Universities of Chieti Pescara and Sassari in particular are among our major allies in this challenge for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals "SDG 3 - Achievement of Universal Health".
Italian cooperation is also at the forefront in the agricultural development/economic development sector: in New Halfa, the second largest city by population in the state of Kassala, as many as 28 agricultural cooperatives are united in the "Sesame Producers' asspciation of Wad El Helew". It is a productive reality with over 8,000 small entrepreneurs in the production of sesame. As part of the initiative carried out by UNIDO and financed by Italy, a sesame machinery was supplied for cleaning sesame seeds, an indispensable plant for guaranteeing a level of quality of the product such as to make it suitable for export and ensuring a constant technical assistance activity. The Italian intervention also concerns the construction of a cold storage facility at the fruit and vegetable market of Kassala which makes it possible to considerably reduce the times of rapid perishability of the production of fruit and vegetables, with a considerable economic benefit which allows constant prices in times of drought. Finally, the UNIDO initiative recently introduced a risk sharing financial mechanism that allowed the installation of 9 solar plants for a value of 80,000 thousand.
